Ego: The Impenetrable Wall
Ego: The Impenetrable Wall
My ego gets
in the way of a lot of things: Healthy relationships, self-satisfaction, and
owning up to my flaws. After all, I can assure you I am not ten feet tall nor
bulletproof, but my ego can surely make myself sound as if I were. So, to
mitigate this controlling, narcissistic feeling of “I’m better than everyone
and everything,” I have looked to Ryan Holiday for some clues and insights into
how to do so.
Although I
have not yet read Ryan Holiday’s book Ego
is the Enemy, I hope to do so in my upcoming reading challenge. However,
after listening to Ryan Holiday’s lectures on his YouTube Channel, “The Daily Stoic,” I believe I can share enough
valuable insight to be of some use to you.
“Ego,”
Holiday says “is the impediment to improvement.” And although self-appreciation
is not bad (too much can be), a balance between self-appreciation and humility
is paramount to being happy with your accomplishments, achieving progress in
your endeavors, and sufficiently caring for yourself.
Needing to
work on this, I find myself comparing my success, adversity, and
accomplishments too much to peers, co-workers, and colleagues alike. However, I
now realize that comparisons, due to an overly confident ego, subjugate the
control you have on your life, ultimately giving that control to the person or
thing in which you are comparing yourself too.

Comparison is the thief of joy.
